Description
Flown for the first time in September 1934, this aircraft was a development of the earlier Gauntlet. It was ordered by the R.A.F. in 1935 and some 230 machines were built before the introduction of the Mk. II version. 72 Squadron were the first to be equipped with Mk. 1 machines, which were also flown by 73 Squadron whose famous markings are shown on the decals. These aircraft were also supplied to a number of other countries including China, Sweden and Finland. The Gladiator marked the end of the single seat Biplane Fighter in the R.A.F. and was in fact obsolescent when first delivered to Squadrons although it acquitted itself well in service.
