Description

When, in 1941, Luftwaffe units began to receive the Fw 190A, it was already apparent that the aircraft in question could be easily adapted to other roles. A powerful engine allowed for a large range of weaponry, not only imbedded in the wings, but also carried under a variety of hardpoints. One of the more prominent variants to be extrapolated from the Fw 190 was a fighter-bomber version for the direct support of ground forces. The concept began to be developed by the Luftwaffe, the Ja 87 Stuka, a recognized symbol of the German Blitzkrieg, was beginning to become obsolete in terms of the increasingly defensive posture of the Luftwaffe. The new requirement called for an aircraft capable of delivering ordnance as well as defending itself with onboard weapons. The development of a fully capable fighter-bomber variant of the Fw 190 proceeded until the end of hostilities.
