Description
Formed in early 1945 by the disgraced General Adolf Galland, Jagdverband 44 (JV 44) was an elite Luftwaffe unit flying revolutionary Me 262 jet fighters. Composed of top aces like Gerhard Barkhorn and Johannes Steinhoff, the unit fought desperately against Allied bombers.
Because jets were highly vulnerable during takeoff and landing, JV 44 formed the Platzschutzschwarm—a squadron of Fw 190D "Doras" led by Heinz Sachsenberg. Painted with striking red-and-white striped bellies so German flak gunners wouldn't shoot them down, these Doras protected the airfield until the war's final days in May 1945.
