Description
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 emerged in the second half of WWII as one of the Luftwaffe’s most formidable fighters. Originating from a 1938 RLM specification, the first prototype flew in June 1939, but early trials revealed serious problems. After extensive modifications, the aircraft entered service in 1941 with II./JG 26. Continuous development produced successive A-series variants, improving engines, armament, and airframes, culminating in the widely built A-8 and the powerful A-9. Parallel fighter-bomber F and G versions expanded its ground-attack role, while the D-series introduced an inline Jumo engine. Though less numerous than the Bf 109, the Fw 190 played a vital role on all fronts, excelling as a heavily armed interceptor against Allied bombers and later adapted successfully for night fighting.
