Description
In the latter half of WWII, the Fw 190 became one of the Luftwaffe’s most capable fighters. First flown in 1939, it overcame early flaws to enter service in 1941 as the Fw 190A-1, quickly proving effective on the Western Front. Successive variants—the A-2 through A-5—introduced stronger engines and heavier armament, while expanding production pushed output to nearly 1,900 units in 1942. Later models such as the A-6 to A-8 added reinforced wings, MG 151 cannons, and optional MK 108s for bomber interception. The fighter-bomber F and long-range G versions broadened its mission set. In 1944 the inline-engined Fw 190D revived the design with improved high-altitude performance. Serving on all fronts, the Fw 190 remained a key Luftwaffe fighter until war’s end.
