Description
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the Luftwaffe’s most effective fighters of World War II. Designed by Kurt Tank to meet a 1938 RLM requirement, the first prototype flew on June 1, 1939. After extensive modifications and testing, the aircraft entered service in 1941. The Fw 190 quickly proved superior to many Allied fighters, including early Spitfires and Hurricanes. Successive variants introduced more powerful BMW engines, heavier armament, and specialized roles such as fighter-bomber and ground attack missions. The Fw 190A-5, introduced in 1943, featured a 15 cm engine-forward extension to improve balance and payload capacity. Widely used as a fighter, bomber interceptor, and Reich defender, the Fw 190 remained a key German combat aircraft until the war’s end.
