Description
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-5 was the first A-series variant to use the more powerful BMW 801D-2 engine, an upgrade over the earlier 801C. To accommodate the new engine and systems, the fuselage was lengthened by 15 cm and the cowling slightly extended. Entering production in spring 1943, around 1,752 units were built. The A-5 served as the foundation for later radial-engine Fw 190 variants and saw widespread frontline use before being succeeded by the A-6 and A-8. It also marked the A-series’ shift into fighter-bomber roles with the U3 and U8 subvariants, operating on all major Luftwaffe fronts.
