Description

In the second half of the Second World War, the Fw 190A was the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. The A-5 version was developed to eliminate the overheating problems of the BMW 801 engine that plagued the earlier variants. The forward part of the fuselage was extended by 15 cm to accommodate a new engine mounting and larger cooling fan. Fw 190A-5s were in service from the spring of 1943 and saw combat on all fronts where the Luftwaffe operated. They were used in various roles, as both fighters and fighter-bombers. The MW 50 system water-methanol mixture injection system was used to increase engine performance for short periods. The Fw 190A-5 also served as the basis for several sub-variants, including the torpedo carrier Fw 190A-5/U14. The first Fw 190A-5s reached operational units in May 1943.
