Description
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 became one of the Luftwaffe’s most important fighters during the Second World War. Designed in response to a 1938 requirement, the first prototype flew in 1939. After extensive testing and development, the Fw 190A-1 entered service in 1941, proving to be a fast, powerful and highly maneuverable fighter.
The design evolved rapidly through successive versions. The Fw 190A-2 introduced further improvements, while the arrival of the BMW 801D-2 engine in 1942 marked an important step in the aircraft’s development. Later variants received increasingly powerful armament, additional armour and various modifications to improve their combat capabilities.
Development continued through the Fw 190A series up to the A-9, which was fitted with the powerful BMW 801TS engine. The versatile Fw 190 was adapted for both fighter and ground-attack missions, with numerous armament and equipment configurations.
A parallel development resulted in the Fw 190D, which began reaching Luftwaffe units during the second half of 1944. Together, the various Fw 190 versions established the aircraft as one of Germany’s most significant combat aircraft of World War II.
