Description
Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-5 flown by Oberleutnant Josef "Sepp" Wurmheller of 9./JG 2, Vannes, France, September 1943. A bold and skilled pilot over the English Channel, Wurmheller was twice shot down in the Battle of Britain. In mid-1942, he downed 22 RAF aircraft, raising his tally to 50. During the Dieppe Raid on August 17, 1942, he shot down seven planes in one day—despite crash-landing and breaking his leg. Later that day, still injured, he flew again and scored more kills. On May 8, 1944, he became leader of III./JG 2 "Richthofen". After Huppertz’s death, he assumed full command. Wurmheller died on June 22, 1944, after a mid-air collision, shortly after scoring his 102nd victory. This Fw 190 was one of at least two he flew during this time.
