Description
Messerschmitt's elegant Me209 was developed to provide a successor to the highly successful Me109 series. The original Me209 was a small, high-speed aircraft that was designed to compete for the world's speed record. A tiny and problematic aircraft, the Me209V1 nonetheless captured the world speed record, clocking a speed of 469.22 miles per hour. Three more prototypes were constructed, the V4 being completed as a higher version. This proved to be a complete failure, and as it was obvious that this purpose-built aircraft held little potential for commercial development, the RLM contemplated transferring to a new fighter design which was originally designated as the fighter Me109L and designated the Me209 II. This design eventually evolved into a completely new aircraft, but the Versuchs numbers remained sequential with the original Me209 design. Messerschmitt designated Me209V5. This aircraft was also referred to as the Me209A-1 representative, the first of the first series production model. A further prototype was created as a secondary production variant featuring a different engine and tail structure, designated the Me209A-II. In the event, the Me209 program was abandoned by the RLM in favor of the Focke-Wulf Fw190D and Ta152 series of fighters, and the design never went into production.
