Description
The Ta152H-1 was the first real high-altitude fighter of Luftwaffe. Though quite similar to the Fw190D-9 in appearance, the Ta152H was a totally new aircraft having the redesigned long span wing, larger tail fin, and the pressurized cockpit. Powered by the Jumo213E liquid-cooled engine equipped with a three-speed two-stage super-charger, it was able to achieve exceptional performance at high altitude. It could reach a maximum speed of 765 km/h at the altitude of 12,500m, which was nearly the estimated maximum speed that a piston-engined aircraft might achieve! However, only three was a short span version Ta152C powered by the DB603LA engine, but none of its production model was built. About 60 aircraft of the Ta152 were said to be built since December 1944 till the end of the war, and some were delivered to JG301 mainly for a duty of protecting the Me262 jet fighters from attack of the Allied fighters during their take-off and landing. It was too late for this aircraft to demonstrate its outstanding performance in its exceptional high-altitude performance.
