Description
Ever since the pre-production model (A-0), there was no change in its basic airframe design up to the Fw190A-4. However, due to the move of gravity caused by the increase of weight through changing and adding equipment it was necessary to move the engine cowl 15cm forward to adjust its balance. Besides, this caused a bigger gap between the engine cowl and the fuselage was faired and at the same time the nose gun cover was enlarged. This change was on the same line with subsequent versions too. Another bigger change was that an enlarged access panel on the left side of the fuselage came along with all the later version of the A series. A lot of sub-variants existed with various armament and equipment on the Fw190A-5. The standard A-5 rather than Among those was a special aircraft modified for high-altitude combat flown by Major Hermann Gräf (one of the famous German Luftwaffe ace). This model flown by Hermann was unique with its engine cowl having external air intake tubes for improved air flow to the super charger. This was named Fw190A-5 Spezial.
