Description

The Bf109G was a design modification intended to compensate for the premature obsolescence (less than one year after deployment) of the Bf109F model, as situation brought about by dramatic Allied aircraft developmental advances at the start of the war. Point under consideration for improvement in the new design included speed, firepower and defensive armor, as well as various ordnance loadout configuration kits to enable the aircraft to perform a wide variety of missions. Because no aerodynamic improvements on the F model airframe were attempted, and as the internal armor layout and other minor modifications involved in the G model upgrade were relatively simple, the G series, starting with the G-0 model, was also to go into production in october 1941, a mere three months after conception of the design. Subsequent models included the high altitude capable G-1, featuring a pressurized cabin, the G-2, with an unpressurized cabin, and the G-3, with landing gear improvements and pressurized cabin. In early 1942, the Luftwaffe determined a need for a Bf109 fighter bomber variant capable of carrying a 500kg bomb on long-range missions. The resultant FiSk199 design was drawn up by the Fieseler company, with production slated to be carried out by the Skoda company. The FiSk199 was capable of carrying 300-liter drop tanks under each wing, and was fitted with the SC500 bombrack in the center-underwing position. The design was also fitted with a center-fuselage wheel to give the airframe extra ground-clearance to handle the loadout. Eventually, the FiSk199 design never went into mass production, being passed over for a Fw190 variant modified to carry out the same long-range fighter-bomber mission.
