Description
The Fokker D.XXI was a Dutch monoplane fighter designed in the mid-1930s, featuring a fixed landing gear and a fully enclosed cockpit. Entering service in 1938, it was powered by a Bristol Mercury radial engine, reaching speeds around 460 km/h. Typically armed with four 7.92 mm machine guns, it was robust and maneuverable, though lightly armed and outpaced by newer fighters. The D.XXI saw combat during the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940 and achieved significant success in Finnish service, particularly against Soviet aircraft during the Winter War and Continuation War. Simple, rugged, and dependable, the D.XXI was a key component of early WWII air defenses in smaller air forces.
