The Fiat C.R.42 was the last fighter biplane placed in service by any major power, as it did not enter service until 1939. By which time the monoplane the C.R.32, in the Spanish Civil war; the latter was quite capable of outfighting the Russian I-16 monoplane (Republican Air Force) and the Polikarpov I-15 biplane. Its introduction had been delayed by the success of its predecessor, the Italian Air Ministry concluding from this the misleading deduction that a biplane could be accepted for aerial combat. In action, this theory undoubtedly was it proved the superior quality of its pilots, and manoeuvrability greatly enhanced by highly skilled pilots of the R.A.F. As a result, it was withdrawn from first-line duties during 1941, but its superb flying qualities found it a new and highly successful sphere of employment as a ground-strafer; some machines. The Fiat C.R.42 was an all-metal basic-construction biplane. It was powered by an 840 h.p. Fiat A74 R.C.38 14-cylinder radial engine. Its speed was 274 m.p.h, its wing span was 31'9'' and its length 27'3''.
