Description

The Fairey Firefly, designed to replace the Fulmar, first flew in December 1941 and entered service with the Fleet Air Arm in October 1943. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon II engine, it offered superior performance and handling. Armed with 20mm cannons, it featured a distinctive elliptical wing and chin radiator. The initial F.Mk I variant was followed by the FR.Mk I, equipped with ASH radar for reconnaissance. Though the NF.Mk II night-fighter version failed, modified FR.Mk Is served in the role. The Firefly excelled in maritime strike missions, notably over Norway and during attacks on the Tirpitz. In the Pacific, it proved effective in combat, with 1772 Sqn aircraft the first British planes to fly over Tokyo in July 1945.
