Description
The Fairey Albacore was introduced to replace the aging Swordfish, offering modern features like an enclosed cabin, heating, a windscreen wiper, and automatic dinghy ejection. Despite this, it failed to surpass the Swordfish and instead served alongside it—ironically being retired earlier. Designed to Specification S.41/36, its first flight was on 17 December 1938, with production starting in 1939. Entering service with No. 826 Squadron in March 1940, it saw action in the Battle of Cape Matapan in 1941. At its peak in 1942, 15 squadrons operated Albacores. Production ended in 1943 after 800 units.
