Description
The Grumman F9F-8 Cougar was a swept-wing development of the earlier straight-wing Panther, designed to give the U.S. Navy a jet with better transonic performance. Introduced in 1954, the F9F-8 featured a longer fuselage, increased internal fuel capacity, and a more refined wing design for improved handling and range. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney J48 turbojet, it could reach speeds of around 1,050 km/h (650 mph). Armed with four 20 mm cannons and capable of carrying rockets or bombs, it was used primarily for fleet defense and ground attack. Though it saw limited combat, the F9F-8 was an important transitional jet and served as a trainer into the 1970s.
