Description
The F6F-5N Hellcat Nightfighter was a specialized version of the Grumman F6F Hellcat, a dominant U.S. Navy carrier-based fighter of World War II. Introduced in 1944, the F6F-5N was equipped with radar (typically the AN/APS-6) mounted in a wing pod, allowing it to engage enemy aircraft at night or in poor visibility. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, it combined excellent speed, ruggedness, and firepower, typically featuring six .50 cal machine guns or a mix of machine guns and 20mm cannons. The F6F-5N was crucial in defending Allied fleets from night raids and hunting Japanese aircraft in the Pacific. Its reliable performance and advanced radar made it one of the most effective nightfighters of the war.
