Description
The F6F-5 Hellcat, introduced in April 1944, was the most produced variant of the Hellcat series, with 7,870 built. It featured improved equipment and armament over the F6F-3, including six .50 cal machine guns or a mix with 20mm cannons, plus bombs or rockets on underwing racks. Some were fitted with radar for night fighting. The Hellcat was the most successful US Navy fighter in the Pacific, credited with 5,223 enemy kills—75% of Navy and Marine aerial victories. Flown by 305 aces, it served with the US, UK, and others into the 1950s.
