Description
The F6F-3 Hellcat was the first major production version of Grumman’s famous fighter, replacing the Wildcat in U.S. Navy frontline units during WWII. More powerful, faster, and better armed than its predecessor, the F6F-3 quickly won the trust of pilots and ground crews. It could out-climb, out-turn (above 200 mph), and outgun the Japanese Zero, making it a deadly opponent. By early 1944, all USN carrier fighter units had switched to the Hellcat. Strong, reliable, and effective at all altitudes, the F6F-3 became a dominant force in the Pacific, credited with 5,223 kills for only 270 air combat losses.
