Description
The Grumman F6F Hellcat was a powerful American carrier-based fighter developed to replace the Grumman F4F Wildcat and counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero during World War II. Designed by Grumman, it first flew in 1942 and quickly became the backbone of U.S. Navy carrier aviation. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the Hellcat was fast, durable, and heavily armed with six .50-caliber machine guns. The F6F-3 variant could also carry bombs and rockets for ground-attack missions. Entering combat in 1943, the aircraft proved extremely successful in the Pacific, achieving an outstanding kill-to-loss ratio against Japanese fighters and becoming one of the most effective naval fighters of the war.
