Description
At the outbreak of the War in the Pacific, the Grumman F4F Wildcat was the main US Navy and USMC carrier fighter. Though slower and less maneuverable than the Japanese Zero, it achieved solid combat success thanks to rugged construction, armor, and self-sealing fuel tanks. Effective tactics such as Lt. Cmdr. Jimmy Thach’s “Thach Weave” and hit-and-run ambushes offset performance disadvantages. Wildcats fought at Wake Island, Coral Sea, Midway, and Guadalcanal. The F4F-3 carried four .50-cal machine guns but suffered from gun-jamming issues. Later variants served until replaced by the Hellcat and Corsair, with production continuing as the FM-2 for escort carriers.
