Description
The McDonnell F2H-2 Banshee was an early Cold War U.S. Navy jet fighter, developed as an improved version of the original F2H-1. Entering service in 1949, it featured more powerful Westinghouse J34-WE-34 engines, increased fuel capacity, and a strengthened airframe. It retained four 20mm cannons and introduced underwing pylons for bombs, rockets, or drop tanks, expanding its ground-attack capability. The F2H-2 was carrier-capable and served extensively during the Korean War, providing escort, ground attack, and reconnaissance missions. Its long range and reliable performance made it a favorite among naval aviators. The variant also led to several subtypes, including the F2H-2P photo-reconnaissance model. It remained in frontline service until the mid-1950s.
