Description
The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet is an American multirole combat aircraft, initially intended to be deployed on board US Navy aircraft carriers. They can land and be catapulted from a non-American aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle of the French Navy, whose American-made catapults are compatible.
Put into service in the early 1980s, it has so far been built in more than 1,500 units and exported to about ten countries.
It is the second most used combat aircraft in the world in 2012 with, according to an estimate, 1,005 active aircraft, or 6% of the global fleet of combat aircraft.
Since 1987, it has been used by the US Navy’s Blue Angels aerobatic patrol.
