Description
The Republic F-84F Thunderstreak was a swept-wing development of the straight-wing F-84 Thunderjet, created to meet the demands of the early Cold War jet age. Entering service in the mid-1950s, it was designed primarily as a fighter-bomber, optimized for high-speed low-level attack and nuclear strike missions rather than air combat. Powered by a Wright J65 turbojet, the Thunderstreak featured increased internal fuel, strengthened wings, and the ability to carry a wide variety of ordnance, including conventional bombs, rockets, and tactical nuclear weapons. Although its performance was limited by engine reliability and handling issues, the F-84F served extensively with NATO air forces, becoming a key component of Western air power during a tense period of global confrontation.
