Description
The F-82 Twin Mustang was a unique American long-range, two-seat fighter and the last piston-powered combat aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force. Designed by North American in late 1943 to escort B-29 bombers over distances exceeding 2,000 miles, it combined two P-51 Mustang fuselages into a single airframe. Additional fuselage plugs housed fuel and equipment, while enlarged tails improved safety during engine failure. The prototype first flew on April 15, 1945. Later versions included escort and night fighters equipped with radar. By 1950, the F-82 replaced the P-61 interceptor and saw combat in Korea, where it achieved the first aerial victory of the war.
