Description
The P-51 Mustang was one of the most successful fighters of World War II. Designed by North American Aviation after a request from the British Purchasing Commission in 1940, the prototype flew only months later. Early versions used the Allison V-1710 engine, but later models were fitted with the powerful Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin, greatly improving high-altitude performance. With its laminar-flow wing, long range, and six .50-caliber machine guns, the P-51D became an outstanding escort fighter for Allied bombers. The Mustang also served in reconnaissance roles as the F-6 variant and remained one of the most famous fighters in aviation history.
