Description
The North American P-51 Mustang is considered one of the finest fighters of WWII. Although American-built, it originated from a 1940 British request for fighters. North American Aviation proposed a new design, led by engineer Edward Schmued. The prototype flew on October 26, 1940, powered by an Allison V-1710 engine. Its sleek fuselage, laminar-flow wing, and belly radiator using the Meredith effect gave it excellent speed and range. Early Mustangs served mainly in reconnaissance due to poor high-altitude performance. Fitting the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine solved this issue, creating the highly successful P-51B and P-51C. Later the P-51D introduced a bubble canopy and six .50-cal machine guns. Reconnaissance variants, such as the F-6D and F-6K, carried cameras but retained full combat capability.
