Description
The F6F-5K was an unmanned, radio-controlled drone conversion of the Grumman F6F Hellcat, developed after World War II. Based on the rugged and reliable F6F-5 airframe, these drones were modified for high-risk missions such as nuclear weapons testing, aerial target practice, and hazardous reconnaissance. Brightly painted—often in red or orange—for visibility, the F6F-5K could be flown remotely from a control aircraft or ground station. Notably, F6F-5Ks were used during Operation Crossroads and other atomic tests in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Though no longer a combat aircraft, the F6F-5K extended the Hellcat’s service life through vital Cold War support roles.
