Description

The F-4 Phantom II, a supersonic fighter aircraft utilized over 5000 hours during the Vietnam War, was the result of developmental efforts by McDonnell Aircraft. When the Navy version was introduced in 1958, the aircraft was adopted for use by the United States Air Force, Navy and Marines, and its utilization continued for 20 years. Nicknamed "Double Ugly" and "Rhino", the aircraft was well-loved by pilots and ground crews alike.
Development of the F-4EJ model was in response to a 1968 requirement issued by the United States Navy for an all-weather carrier-based fighter aircraft. The first production model, performing its first flight on May 27, 1958, had an initial climb rate of 41,300 ft/min and a top speed of Mach 2.2. The Air Force first utilized the aircraft in the C model-this later being developed into the E model.
