Description
The F-106A Delta Dart was a sleek, delta-winged fighter specifically designed to intercept enemy bombers attempting to attack the United States. It was developed by the Convair division of General Dynamics as a successor to the earlier F-102. First flown from Edwards Air Force Base in December 1956, the F-106 remained one of the most powerful and maneuverable aircraft in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard inventory until being replaced by newer fighter aircraft in the eighties. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney J75 Turbojet engine, the Delta Dart was capable of speeds in excess of 1500 miles per hour. The F-106 was equipped with a Hughes MA-1 electronic guidance and fire control system. Its ventral weapons bay contained four Falcon and one nuclear-tipped Genie air intercept missiles. In the late sixties, the U.S. Air Force instituted a training program for fighter pilots known as ACT or Air Combat Tactics. The F-106, with its low wing-loading and high thrust-to-weight ratio, proved that it could outperform almost any U.S. aircraft then operational. Modifications to the original Delta Dart design included provision for aerial refueling, improved avionics, a one-piece bubble canopy, and a snap shoot gunsight. These enabled the F-106 to be deployed world-wide in the air defense role. Your model depicts an F-106A of the 84th Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the Aerospace Defense Command while stationed at Oxnard AFB, California.
