Description
Pilots called the Starfighter “the Lady”—beautiful, elegant, but demanding. It required full concentration, yet rewarded pilots with outstanding performance. When the F-104 entered service with the German Air Force in 1962, it marked a leap in aviation, forcing crews to master two generations of technology almost overnight. Even today, its performance remains remarkable: climbing from ground level to 13,594 meters in 4 minutes 22 seconds, accelerating from 880 to 2,100 km/h with two Sidewinders, and a climb rate of 243.8 m/s. After 25 years of service, it was retired on October 23, 1987. Later aircraft received stunning special paint schemes, symbolizing the Starfighter’s enduring legacy as a NATO backbone.
