Description
The Douglas A-26 Invader was a fast, twin-engine light bomber and ground attack aircraft developed by the United States during World War II. First flown in July 1942 and introduced in 1943, the A-26 featured a sleek, all-metal design, a glass or solid nose (depending on role), and powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engines. Capable of speeds over 350 mph, it carried bombs, rockets, and up to 14 .50 caliber machine guns, making it one of the most heavily armed aircraft of its class. The A-26 served in WWII, Korea, and even Vietnam (redesignated B-26 in 1948), praised for its speed, durability, and versatility in bombing, strafing, and reconnaissance roles. Crewed by three, it could deliver precision attacks at low or medium altitudes. Its effectiveness kept it in service for decades, and it remains one of the few aircraft to see combat in three major wars. The Invader left a lasting legacy as one of America's most successful attack aircraft.
