Description
The Corsair Mk III was the British designation for the Vought F3A-1 Corsair, built under license by Brewster for the Royal Navy during World War II. Based on the American F4U-1, the Mk III retained the same powerful R-2800 engine and distinctive gull-wing design but was adapted for British carrier use. Modifications included clipped wingtips for easier hangar storage and changes to radio equipment. The Mk III suffered from quality issues due to Brewster’s declining production standards, which limited its operational use. As a result, many were relegated to training roles or second-line duties, with front-line units preferring the Vought-built Mk II and Goodyear-built Mk IV variants.
