Description
The Vought F4U Corsair Mk II was a British designation for the Vought F4U-1A Corsair supplied to the Fleet Air Arm during World War II. Built by the Vought, it featured the Corsair’s distinctive inverted gull wing and was powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine producing about 2,000 hp. The Mk II had clipped wingtips to allow operation from British aircraft carriers with lower hangar ceilings. Entering service in 1944, it was used mainly in the Pacific with the British Pacific Fleet for fighter cover, ground attack, and strike escort missions. The Corsair proved fast, rugged, and heavily armed with six 12.7 mm machine guns, reaching speeds of about 670 km/h.
