Description
The P-51D-5 was the first major production block of the definitive "D" variant of the North American P-51 Mustang, widely regarded as one of the finest long-range escort fighters of World War II. Powered by a Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin V-1650-7 engine delivering up to 1,490 horsepower, this single-seat aircraft combined a revolutionary laminar-flow wing with a unique belly-mounted radiator to achieve an impressive top speed of roughly 440 mph.
Distinguished visually from later D-models by its original razorback-style vertical fin, the D-5 variant introduced the iconic teardrop bubble canopy, drastically improving the pilot's all-around field of vision. Heavily armed with six wing-mounted .50 caliber Browning machine guns and capable of carrying external drop tanks that stretched its operational range past 1,500 miles, the P-51D-5 escorted Allied bombers deep into enemy territory, fundamentally shifting air superiority in the European theater.
