Description
The CAC Wirraway was an Australian training and light attack aircraft developed by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in the late 1930s. Founded in 1936, the company aimed to ensure Australia could produce its own aircraft if overseas supplies were cut off. Designed by Lawrence Wackett, the Wirraway was based on the North American NA-33 trainer, a predecessor of the Texan. The prototype flew in 1938 and the aircraft was strengthened to serve both training and ground-support roles. Several versions were produced, including CA-1, CA-3, CA-5 and later variants. During World War II it served mainly with the Royal Australian Air Force for pilot training but also saw combat in places such as Rabaul, Darwin and New Guinea, where it performed reconnaissance and close-support missions. Production ended after the war, but many aircraft remained in military and civilian use for years.
