Description

The G-6 was the most numerous version of the Bf 109. It was manufactured from the early spring of 1943 to the end of WW2. The G-6 was developed from the F series and, compared to its predecessor, the fuselage was reinforced and the tail surfaces enlarged. The most noticeable change compared to the F series was the addition of blisters in front of the cockpit to accommodate the belt feed mechanism of the MG 131 machine guns. The G-6 entered service with JG 27 and JG 51 on the Eastern Front in the spring of 1943, and later with JG 1, JG 3, JG 5 and JG 11, which defended the Reich against Allied bomber formations. The Bf 109G-6 was also used by the Air Forces of Finland, Hungary, Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria. The Bf 109G-6 served on all fronts, from North Africa to Lapland, from Western Europe to the Balkans. Many aircraft survived the war and some of them are still flying today.
