Description
No aircraft is more closely tied to the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe than the Messerschmitt Bf 109. It served from Germany’s early conquests to the final defense of the Reich and remained in production beyond WWII. Designed in 1934–35 to meet a modern fighter requirement, the Bf 109 came from Bayerische Flugzeugwerke under Willy Messerschmitt. Innovative for its time, it featured retractable landing gear, a slim fuselage, enclosed cockpit, and clean aerodynamics. Early engine issues were solved with the Junkers Jumo 210, later replaced by powerful DB 605 inverted V-12 engines. The Bf 109 became a symbol of German air power.
