Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was one of the most important fighters of World War II and became closely linked to the rise and fall of the German Luftwaffe. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt in 1934–35 for a single-engine day fighter requirement, it featured advanced elements for its time, including a low-wing design, retractable landing gear, and an enclosed cockpit. Early prototypes led to production models powered by Daimler-Benz DB 601 engines. The Bf 109 first saw combat in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 and later served throughout WWII in many variants. The Bf 109G-2 “Gustav,” powered by the DB 605 engine producing about 1,450 hp, retained the armament of one 20 mm MG 151/20 cannon and two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns. Around 1,590 G-2s were produced.
