Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe's most important fighter throughout World War II, serving from Germany's early victories to its final defeat. Designed by Professor Willy Messerschmitt in 1934–35, it featured a compact monoplane design, enclosed cockpit, and advanced aerodynamics. Early engine problems were solved with the DB 601 and later DB 605 engines. The Bf 109 first saw combat in the Spanish Civil War before entering mass production. It fought in Poland, France, the Battle of Britain, North Africa, and the Eastern Front, evolving through B, E, F, G, and K variants. It also served as a fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, and trainer. Several countries continued operating the Bf 109 until the 1960s.
