Description

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe’s most iconic and prolific fighter, symbolizing Germany’s air power from its early conquests to ultimate defeat in World War II. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt in response to a 1934–35 Luftwaffe fighter requirement, the Bf 109 prioritized performance through minimal weight and compact dimensions. First flown in 1935, it introduced advanced features like a low-wing monoplane layout, retractable landing gear, narrow inline engine profile, leading-edge slats, and an enclosed cockpit. Its true potential was realized with the DB 601 engine, which enabled high speeds and reliability. Mass-produced in numerous variants, the Bf 109 became the backbone of the Luftwaffe throughout the war.
