Description

The Bf 109G-10/R6 Erla was a late-war variant developed as a temporary replacement for the delayed Bf 109K-4. Built by Erla Leipzig from September 1944, it was powered primarily by the DB 605D engine, providing improved high-altitude performance against Allied bombers and escort fighters. It featured a unique streamlined engine cowling, larger FO 987 oil cooler, enlarged supercharger intake, Erla canopy, and many aircraft were fitted with the PKS 12 autopilot, earning the R6 designation. Produced in the 49xxxx and 15xxxx blocks, 1,709 aircraft were built and entered Luftwaffe service in October 1944. Early examples used the DB 605ASM engine before standard DB 605D production was established.
