Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the Luftwaffe’s most iconic fighter, serving from before WWII through to its end. Developed in 1934–35 to meet an RLM requirement, it was designed by Willy Messerschmitt for top performance and aerodynamics. Compact and modern, it featured a closed cockpit, retractable gear, narrow wings, wing slots, flaps, and a liquid-cooled engine. First tested in the Spanish Civil War, the Bf 109 evolved into the DB 601/605-powered “E” and later variants. Built in tens of thousands, it remained in near-continuous production for over two decades and was central to Germany’s air war.
