Description
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the defining fighter of the Luftwaffe, serving from the start of Nazi Germany’s campaigns to its ultimate defeat. Developed in response to a 1934 call for a modern monoplane fighter, it was designed by Willy Messerschmitt of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, drawing on the success of his earlier Bf 108. Compact, agile, and ahead of its time, the Bf 109 featured innovations like a low-wing layout, retractable landing gear, narrow-profile wings, small flaps, and an enclosed cockpit—rare in the mid-1930s. Its performance issues were resolved with the introduction of the DB 601 engine, which, along with its later variants, powered tens of thousands of Bf 109s across many versions, securing its place as the Luftwaffe’s most enduring and influential fighter.
