Description
The Bell P-39 Airacobra was one of WWII’s most unique American fighters. It featured tricycle landing gear, a mid-fuselage engine behind the cockpit, and car-like side doors. A long shaft connected the engine to a nose-mounted propeller, allowing a 37mm cannon to fire through the hub—one of the largest fitted to a single-engine fighter. Most variants also had .50 cal nose guns and wing-mounted machine guns. Lacking a supercharger, it was limited at high altitudes but excelled in low-level ground attack. Widely used by the Soviets, it also served with U.S., British, Free French, Italian, and Australian forces.
