Description
The Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing was a luxury high-speed biplane developed in the mid-1930s by Walter Beech’s Beech Aircraft Corporation. Featuring an unconventional staggered wing layout and retractable landing gear, it combined elegant design with outstanding performance. The refined D17 version, powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-985 engine, gained fame through record-setting flights by Jackie Cochran and strong commercial success. With the outbreak of WWII, the Staggerwing served widely as a fast staff and communications aircraft, designated UC-43 in the USAAF, GB-1/GB-2 in the U.S. Navy, and Traveller Mk.I in British service. Produced until 1949, it remains celebrated as one of aviation’s most beautiful aircraft.
