Description
In 1944, facing the loss of air superiority and a shortage of fighters and pilots, the Luftwaffe urgently needed an innovative defense aircraft. The Bachem Ba 349 Natter, a semi-expendable manned surface-to-air missile, became a top priority due to interest from Himmler and Kammler. First prototypes flew in early 1945 near Neuburg an der Donau. Constructed entirely of wood and powered by a Walter HWK 109-509A rocket with four jettisonable boosters, it could climb at 11,000 m/min. Armed with 24 nose-mounted 73mm rockets, the nose would be jettisoned after firing, and the pilot would bail out. Tests included GR108 cannons. Crew: 1; Wingspan: 3.6 m; Length: 6.1 m; Height: 2.25 m; thrust: 2,100 kgp.
